L. Marie Cook, also known simply as Leslie, has been singing professionally for over ten years. Her smoky, sultry voice mixed with the cheerful rings of the ukulele coalesce into a warm sound that leaves one feeling cozy and ignited. With both originals and covers on the ukulele,
Leslie harnesses her most influential favorites, Bob Marley, Adele, Bon
Iver, and Billie Holiday into a beautiful nourishment for the ears and
heart.
Raised in West Palm Beach, Florida, her love of music began at an early age when she was employed to help her mother, a Jazz singer, at gigs. From hauling PA's, passing out promo packages to booking agents and curling up in banquettes, Leslie learned the from at a very young age what being a musician was all about. And it wasn't long until Leslie began singing all the famous Jazz standards too.
After moving to Hilo, Hawaii for college she gained an interest for the ukulele and quickly began singing and playing at the beach. It wasn't long before she was getting the attention of fellow musicians and soon formed the Reggae-Ska band SheGo! Within the two years she fronted the band with her high energy and sultry moves, they'd written over twenty original songs and self-published a full album, and gained a large following from their residency at The Emerald Orchid.
A move to Los Angeles, serendipitous put Leslie a few bar-stools away from Kent Hertz, an engineer and producer for Steve Miller. Hertz took her under his wing and began shaping her voice for professional recording. Through his artist network and label, Cavalier Artist Group, she met Laniakea Cleary just as he was coming off tour with the Backstreet Boys. The percussionist and the vocalist clicked immediately and began working on a musical project that would turn into SlowStart, a bluesy-electro- rock band. Eventually adding friends and members, the group published an EP under Cavalier and toured Los Angeles' most notorious music venues including, The Viper Room, Whiskey a Go-Go and the Kibitz Room. But in late 2012 the group was having trouble moving forward and Leslie and Laniakea set out for a new venture.
For the entirety of 2014, Leslie and Laniakea shifted musical gears and developed Luv Maschine, an electroronic performance duo influenced by Trap, Pop and Downtempo. The two produced and published the Killin' Em EP along with the singles Badonkadonk and Polaroid Dreams with the label Hooki Sonic. With the help of Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys) the two produced a big budget music video, for the namesake of the EP, Killin' Em. With the momentum and Hollywood attention it looked as though the duo was on the track for stardom. But a family tragedy pulled the two apart and with Leslie and Laniakea on separate coasts, unable to collaborate or tour, they agreed to discontinue the project.
Not to be deterred, Leslie went back to her roots. In 2015, she hit the road and began playing solo- acoustic ukulele shows and open-mics across the US and France. She has most recently settled in Brooklyn, New York and after a year-long break she has reemerged with a new solo project using an electric ukulele and keys. The forthcoming Wild Hearts EP is slated for a 2019 release.
